Apps and Gadgets for Business Travellers Part 1
Staying productive and connected in today’s world of communication is vital to maintaining key business relationships. However, travelling still has a reputation of being a hassle, full of minor complications that can cause a real inconvenience to the corporate traveller. We need access to the internet, our luggage, our devices, our contacts… the list goes on. Thankfully, the consumer market is always one step ahead of the trend and we are seeing more and more technological innovation that is both time and cost efficient. So, to ensure you have access to what you need the most, we have compiled a list of some our favourite apps and gadgets.
Portable Power Banks
A recent study online showed that 90% of business travellers carry a minimum of three electronic devices on them, so a portable power bank is an absolute life saver for those moments when your mobile or tablet is in desperate need of some extra battery life. They’re light-built, slim, compact boxes that you simply charge up for an hour or two whilst you’re at home or in the office, and once it’s charged, you can pop it in your travel bag and you’ll have yourself some emergency battery supply wherever you go!

Thankfully, the consumer market is always one step ahead of the trend and we are seeing more and more technological innovation that is both time and cost efficient. So, to ensure you have access to what you need the most, Business Travel Direct has compiled a list of some our favourite apps and gadgets.
Wi-Fi Finder is the perfect app for the busy corporate traveller. If you have a precious few hours in between meetings and those emails are starting to pile up, then you can utilise this app to find the nearest free Wi-Fi hotspot. You can even filter it by location type – so if you’re in desperate need of an expresso and some internet connection, then Wi-Fi Finder will search for the nearest coffee shop for you. It’ll even use a GPS system to ensure you get there. It’s definitely a huge benefit in a world of online systems and communication.
Noise Cancelling Headphones
Travelling has gained a real reputation for being laborious and a bit of hassle. But here at Business Travel Direct, we think the journey is just as important as the destination, and noise cancelling headphones can play a huge part in your comfort. There’s nothing worse than an eight hour flight at 5am with a screaming child on board – especially if when you land, you’ll be heading straight off to meet a client or head to that conference. Sleep is vital to ensure you’re on top of your game and ready to answer any and all questions fired at you, so we recommend grabbing yourself a pair of these. If you’re willing to pay £60+, we guarantee you’ll be able to get all the rest you need where ever you are… even if the cast of STOMP happens to be on board!
Now this the perfect tool for the on-the-go traveller. The pocket projectors on the market are the no larger than and just as light as a mobile phone, and come with every function you’d need to watch a movie in your hotel room, or play that presentation in the boardroom. And the screen? It can be literally any surface; the table, the wall, the floor. You name it, and most brands these days can project a clear image between 25 to 50 inches wide.
Powered both by replaceable batteries and by mains, most of these gadgets have a built in SD-card reader, significant memory and can be connected to most modern gadgets via HDMI, WXGA, USB AND TF card – so you can leave your laptop behind and carry this little projector around in the pocket of your jacket. Again, dependent on the brand, you might be paying £200 upwards but it might be well worth the investment if you’re regularly presenting facts and figures to clients.
AroundMe is a useful app that provides access to local information and makes cities more accessible. Whether you’re in a rush and you need to find the nearest ATM or taxi rank, you can search on AroundMe and using GPS, it’ll locate it for you, mark it, and guide you to it. Hospitals, petrol stations, coffee shops, cafes, hospitals… to name but a few. It’s the perfect guide to have in your pocket when you’re in an unfamiliar city and you can’t find what you’re looking for.
There is nothing more inconvenient to the business traveller than being told your luggage is somewhere else. That suitcase has everything in it – your suit for your meeting tomorrow, your cables and adapters to charge your devices, your toiletries, make-up… the list goes on. Thankfully, there is an innovative product on the market called Trakdot that means you’ll never have to be without your bags for long.
It employs micro-electronics and ground-based telephone technologies to track and report where your luggage is once it’s left your safe hands at the airport. It’s even clever enough to switch off its transmitters in-flight and essentially go into ‘airplane’ mode, and then switch itself on again upon landing. It’ll use local cellular signals to send a message to the registered owner of the device, so that when you log in to the Trakdot app, you can see exactly where your bags have gone, ring the airline representative directly and rearrange for your luggage to be sent to your hotel room. An age-old inconvenience now has a solution.
The products available to the modern day corporate traveller continue to astound me. It’s not just the convenience-solutions they offer and fulfil, but in my opinion, the level of innovation in this market means that these gadgets and apps are no longer aimed at the ‘techie traveller’; they’re so user-friendly that anyone who needs a solution to their travelling problem can find one, and use it effectively. May you never have low battery, missing luggage, no internet connection or a lack of sleep ever again when travelling for business!
