Apps and Gadgets for Business Travellers Part 2

Sep 21, 2015

In the world of business travel, it can be hard to stay productive, have all the necessary equipment to hand for life on the move, and have all the information you need at your fingertips. Particularly this year, as we’ve seen airlines reduce the carry-on luggage capacity, it’s important to pack smartly and essentially take only the bare minimum with you on your trip. Thankfully, the market has evolved to suit the business travel market, and we’re seeing  a wide range of innovative apps and gadgets being introduced that offer everything one might need when travelling, without adding much extra weight to your suitcase. With the right apps on your Smart phone and the right gadgets in your bag, you should be able to stay productive, connected, up to date and enjoy a stress-free trip.  To read part one of our Apps and Gadgets for Business Travel, please click HERE.

Portable Scanner

portable scannerPortable Scanners on the market in 2015 are slim and compact, so much so that you can fit one neatly into your laptop bag without any difficulty. This nifty little gadget is an indispensable tool to ensure you don’t misplace any loose papers or important contact details, and many of them connect straight to your laptop via standard USB cable. Weighing as little as 200g, they’re functional, efficient and user-friendly, converting anything you scan into a pdf or jpeg image for instant digital storage. Ranging in price from £25 up to £100, it’s certainly not a bad investment for those who tend to return from a trip with a stack of paperwork to work through.

A recent study showed that the average corporate traveller carries at least 3 electronic devices on them whilst on business. From Smart phones, to laptops, tablets, e-readers, battery banks, portable projectors… the list goes on. Consequentially, our need to charge numerous devices simultaneously has risen in recent years, as has our fear of seeing the dreaded ‘battery low’ sign at a crucial moment. An investment in a multi-charger is certainly a solid one, with some allowing you to charge up to 6 devices at once via standard USB or micro-USB.

Worldwide Adapter

worldwide adapterFor as little as £30, a global universal travel adapter will ensure you’ll never be without power anywhere in the world. Many of the adapters on the market also come with 2 USB ports, alongside a standard power output. Our favourite is the GO Travel Worldwide USB (found here), which features 4 sliding pins that allow you to switch between American, British, Chinese and Australian, and European power outlets. With one universal adapter to handle all your gadgets and keep you connected, it’s one less worry for you to tick off the to-do list.

TripCase is an itinerary management app that delivers the right information at the right time, giving you a single place to manage and organise your trips. Available for free on iPhone, Android and Blackberry, TripCase automatically syncs any booking you’ve made with us into your itinerary, allowing you to access all the relevant trip details you’ll need to know where you need to be and when. You can also call an Uber taxi, check the weather or ask for directions, and phone the team here at Business Travel Direct straight from the app.

Office Lens

office lensOffice Lens, part of the Microsoft Corporation, is a free app that digitalises scribbled notes and plans into readable text. It’s an indispensable app for anyone who regularly finds themselves in a creative, brainstorming meeting whereby sheets and whiteboards are constantly in use. Using scanning technology, Office Lens will convert your images into editable Word and Powerpoint documents, allowing you to send the meeting notes straight to the relevant people without having a trail of A5 paper or stickynotes to sift through.

JetLag Genie

If you’re a frequent long-haul flyer, then Jetlag Genie might just be what you need for your next trip. This pocket alarm system will tailor a recommended sleep cycle for you, based on your travel dates, destination and normal sleep patterns, allowing you to acclimatise a little easier to the curse of jetlag. Based on your specific trip and daily-routine information, Jetlag Genie will plan a list of actions that will assist you in your adjustment – everything from seeking sunshine to sitting in the dark, taking a short powernap or medication, and of course, a recommended bed-time and wake-up time based on the time difference. A must-have app for anyone who finds themselves struggling with the after-effects of a long distance trip for weeks on end.
